Teacher Who Disarmed, Then Hugged Student Will Receive Congressional Medal Of Honor

Keonon Lowe, the former Oregon football wide receiver and who disarmed and then hugged a student that brought a gun to a Portland high school in 2019 will receive the Citizen Honor Award by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

Lowe, who was head football coach and security guard at Parkland Rose High School in May 2019, approached a high school student who was armed with a shotgun. Lowe managed to disarm the student and embrace him in a hug, which was seen around the world after surveillance video was released.

Lowe, who prevented a possible tragedy, will be honored for “courage, sacrifice, commitment, integrity and citizenship” along with five other recipients at a later date, according to Sports Illustrated.

How did you feel when you saw the video of Lowe disarming and then hugging the student who was carrying the shotgun? How can communities show confused children that they are loved?
