It Happened On This Day In Country Music History

1961 Happy Birthday Billy Ray Cyrus born on this day in Flatwoods, Kentucky.  Singer, songwriter and actor, best known for his 1992 US #1 single “Achy Breaky Heart,” (which was originally titled “Don’t Tell My Heart”). His 1992 debut album Some Gave All has been certified 9 x Multi-Platinum in the US and is the longest time spent by a debut artist at #1 on the Billboard chart. From 2001 to 2004, Cyrus starred in the television show Doc. The show was about a country doctor who moved from Montana to New York City. In late 2005, he began to co-star in the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana with his daughter Miley Cyrus.

1970 Happy Birthday Kristyn Osborn  born on this day near Magna, Utah. With sisters Kelsi and Kassidy, she formed SHeDAISY, whose 1999 debut album, The Whole SHeBANG, won them a nomination from the Academy of Country Music for top new duet or group. Their hits include “Little Good-Byes,” and  “I Will… But”.

1975 Glen Campbell was at #1 on the US Country singles chart with “Rhinestone Cowboy”.

1985 Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers were at #1 on the Billboard country singles chart with “Real Love”, the title track from Parton’s latest album, Parton and Rogers’ second country chart-topper as a duet act.

2004 Curb Records released Live Like You Were Dying, the eighth studio album by Tim McGraw. The album was nominated for two Grammy’s in 2005 for Best Country Vocal Performance Male and Best Country Album, winning for Best Country Vocal Performance.

2013 “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line logged its 24th week at #1, the longest run at #1 in the chart’s 69-year history. In January 2014, it overtook Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” and became the best-selling country song in the US. As of March 2014, the song has sold in total 6,577,000 copies in the US.

Willie Nelson lives in Maui, Hawaii, in a largely self-sustaining community where all the homes use only solar power. Neighbors include Kris Kristofferson, Woody Harrelson, and Owen Wilson.
